New Super Smash Bros. to focus on “dual support” for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

Masahiro Sakurai has shared his early thoughts regarding the next Super Smash Bros. instalment, confirmed to be headed to Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Aware that it is important that the series progresses, Sakurai recognises that Nintendo must do more than to simply add new characters, items and stages.

“As you noted, there is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game,” Sakurai explained to IGN.

“I intend to change direction a little as we go. The key to that’s going to be its dual support for 3DS/Wii U.”

During Nintendo’s E3 2011 media presentation, global president Satoru Iwata discussed interest in linking both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions together, a sentiment later echoed by Sakurai.

“I’m really just getting started on this so it’s going to take time, but I’ll come up with something that uses that link as the game’s central axis, so I hope you’re looking forward to it.”

Whilst it may still be a while off, consider us immensely excited.
