Sharp has revealed that the new Nintendo Switch models will use IGZO display panels, after the electronics manufacturer stepped in as a supplier for the portable home console’s production.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the advanced display technology – short for indium gallium zinc oxide – is a semiconducting material that Sharp was the first company to use in mass-produced display panels, and promises high resolution, low energy consumption, and durability.

“We will provide what we are most good at, IGZO,” Sharp executive vice president Katsuaki Nomura confirmed when asked which displays it was providing to Nintendo.

However, Nomura did not state which Nintendo Switch model would use the improved IGZO display. For comparison, the current Nintendo Switch model uses older amorphous silicon display technology from Taiwanese suppliers.
