Nintendo has shared more information about the gameplay modes that will see you competing for gold in Nintendo 3DS exclusive Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Whisking players to Rio de Janeiro, host city of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, you can choose between 14 Olympic disciplines and 14 special Plus Events that promise to put a twist on the expected athletic antics.

Archery and swimming will appear, with golf making a return to the Olympic Games for the first time in 112 years and exclusively to the Nintendo 3DS version. In Plus Events, you can look forward to diving through and riding on waves caused by a Thwomp in 100m Freestyle Swimming Plus, or use power-ups in 100m Plus Event to reach the finish line even faster.

Those that want to play as their Mii can take on the Road to Rio mode, arriving in Brazil ready to compete and discovering the rivalry between gyms run by Mario and Sonic. The player will choose which team to join, with unique story events unfolding along the way and completion rewarding you with a Mario or Sonic Mii outfit.

New sports gear can boost your Mii character’s prowess, with amiibo providing short-term boosts if they match your chosen outfit.

Whereas Download Play will let up to four players face off against one another, and Pocket Marathon, another new feature, will count your steps to unlock rewards on the way to the finish line that increase your Mii character’s abilities.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will release exclusively for Nintendo 3DS in North America on March 18th, and across Europe on April 8th.
