Need for Speed: Most Wanted on Wii U “by far the best-looking version”

Criterion Games believe that the upcoming Wii U version of Need For Speed: Most Wanted is “by far the best-looking version of the game,” with the console’s increased memory enabling them to use textures and assets from the PC version.

“When a game has already been released and it comes to a different hardware platform, many people are maybe often not that excited about it, or they think it’s just a straight port, or they think it doesn’t feel unique to their hardware system,” Criterion Games’ Alex Ward explained to GamesRadar.

“With Wii U, it was a system where we didn’t feel until we got the hardware ourselves at home, then it began to click with us as developers. We understood how we were going to use [the] GamePad, and we knew that releasing a vanilla version of the game would just not be enough. It wouldn’t do the machine justice.”

He continued, “So the first thing you’ll see on-screen is a notable increase in visual quality on the Wii U version. The system has more memory so we’re able to use the PC textures and assets, so the game has a much more high quality look. The road is more detailed, the lighting is improved, the draw distance is tweaked. So on Wii U, it is by far the best-looking version of the game.”

In expanding upon the console’s social experience, the Wii U version will include a new Co-Driver mode in which a second player can distract cops, change the time of day, activate car performance options, and more using the Wii U GamePad.

Ward also expressed his belief that “Autolog and Miiverse are a great fit,” and that supporting Nintendo’s social network had been incredibly important.

Billboards within the game now have your friends’ Mii characters on them too, continuing to share and integrate the game experience with Nintendo’s audience.

Need For Speed: Most Wanted will launch across Europe for Wii U on March 22nd.
