Funky Can Creative has announced that its Y2K-inspired musical rail shooter TeaKnights is in development for Nintendo Switch.
The developer has looked to expand “beyond the soda-and-coffee-fueled 2D action of PopSlinger into a new 3D action direction.” The result is a game that blends rail shooter mechanics with the developer’s “love for music, stylish presentation, and expressive character-driven worlds.”
With low-poly 3D visuals and retro-pop colour, you can expect a musical rail shooter experience where aiming, dodging, movement, and rhythm-driven style come together in personality-packed stages.
“After PopSlinger, we wanted to begin a new journey while keeping the same expressive spirit that defines what we do,” explains Funky Can Creative director Jose Luis Abreu. “TeaKnights is our own take on the musical rail shooter – fast, stylish, low-poly, and full of the Y2K energy that shaped so much of what we love about games and pop culture. Seeing the first reaction from fans and Japanese press has been incredibly encouraging.”
The developer has outlined the game’s key features, which include:
- Fully on-rails musical shooter action
- Fast arcade stages built around aiming, dodging, shooting, and hazards
- TeaSetter REGALIAS: tea-powered guns that transform into vapor-swords
- Chain-based combo system connected to a dynamic soundtrack
- Boss battles and real-time encounters with other TeaKnights
- Explorable overworld set across seven tea-themed biodome kingdoms
- Customizable outfits for Camellia
- Low-poly 3D visuals inspired by Y2K-era games, anime, and digital culture
TeaKnights will be released digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide, with a release date or window unspecified.
