Whilst we continue to await its promised unveiling at E3 2011, Shigeru Miyamoto has this week discussed how he views Super Mario 3DS as being a cross between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64, as reported by EDGE, as well as suggesting that the hugely anticipated game will release this year.

“It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64,” Miyamoto explained during an interview. “It won’t convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I’m talking about.”

Miyamoto promised that the game was “completely original, and coming this year,” and discussed the benefits of the Nintendo 3DS hardware, explaining: “For example, the floors floating in space: in 2D it’s difficult to judge the distance, but in 3D it’s really easy.”

It was during Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s GDC ’11 presentation that Super Mario 3DS was first unveiled to the world, where four screenshots and a logo proved to be a satisfying tease.

Of much discussion was a tail that protruded from the letter O within the logo, hinting at a return of the raccoon suit seen within 1988 NES classic Super Mario Bros. 3, prompting speculation that it would make a return.

“The tail you mentioned on the logo – it’s what you think it is,” Miyamoto stated. “You probably know what’s going to happen using that character.”

Roll on E3 2011 in June…
