Legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has responded to the recent retirement rumour debacle, during an interview yesterday with Wall Street Journal.

He explained that he is currently keen to nurture young talent within the company, to ensure that once he eventually retires they will be able to continue without him. Yet also admitted that his eventual departure may lead to the emergence of new talent, and different approaches to projects.

“We have to construct the structure so that the organization so that it can make it without me,” Miyamoto commented. “I should also admit that it might be better without me; I mean that a different approach and different talent might emerge, though I shouldn’t dwell on this because then the article might indeed say ‘Mr. Miyamoto is thinking about retiring,’ because that is not the case.”

Miyamoto also discussed how he would like to focus more of his time on small ideas that may one day grow into much larger projects.
