Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that he is “pretty busy” developing a new Nintendo franchise, news that will surely silence persistent critics.
Having previously sought to broaden their casual appeal through software such as Nintendogs, Wii Fit, and Wii Sports, it’s anyone’s guess what the big N is currently up to.
Regularly tying new gameplay ideas with their globally recognised slate of characters is a formula that has proved an annoyance to the hardcore gaming populace, and something that Miyamoto himself soon disputed. Yet an entirely new franchise, at this point, will be welcomed with open arms.
“With the recent version upgrade [of the Wii U], we’ve worked on the system side of things and we’re planning on further system tweaks ahead, but even as is, [the Wii U] has become a useful item for the living room,” Miyamoto discussed with Famitsu, in an interview ahead of Pikmin 3’s Japanese release.
“However, it’s pointless to talk about other features, no matter how fulfilling, without releasing games of our own, so we hope you’ll look forward to the games to come. Next Spring, with the release of Mario Kart 8, we’ll have a general selection available, so I’ve been thinking it would be a good time to bring out a new franchise.”
Surprised at Miyamoto’s mention, Famitsu pushed for further details although he wouldn’t reveal any more: “I can’t say too much in detail right now, but I’ve been pretty busy with this title these days.”
