It has been nearly a year since Pikmin 3 delighted us, and those that have purchased the Wii U exclusive since will have noticed a recent software update was released.

Once installed this allows players to control their Pikmin using the touch screen, something that many had been surprised hadn’t been available when the game launched. Step in Shigeru Miyamoto, who discusses the new control scheme.

“Hello everyone, Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo here!” he wrote on Miiverse. “Recently, there’s been a new update for Pikmin 3! When you update this software, you can control the Pikmin more directly and conveniently by using the touch screen of the Wii U GamePad to throw them wherever you want.

“This feature makes it easier to put the Pikmin at work, so this is a great update especially for beginners and people new to the Pikmin series. For those that are Pikmin experts already, this feature may help you get a better score in Mission Mode, so I hope you try it out!

“If you haven’t played Pikmin 3 yet, Club Nintendo is having a special campaign where those who register Mario Kart 8 with Club Nintendo may choose one Wii U game from a list of selected games to download for free. Pikmin 3 is one of the games you can choose, so I hope you will take this opportunity to play the game! This special campaign expires July 31, 2014.”
