As part of their post release coverage of Super Mario 3D Land, Weekly Play News was able to interview legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

Whilst the majority of the interview discussed the recent Nintendo 3DS release, the site also queried as to Miyamoto’s current level of involvement within Nintendo’s game development.

To this, he explained his current workflow as “continually playing the games and checking their content, and sharing my opinion with the development staff.” For this, he usually plays around seven games simultaneously, although he focuses his attention more specifically on three games per year.

All of Nintendo’s development staff work on one floor, and when sharing his opinion regarding a project he’ll produce a checklist of his opinions and share it with the game’s director as they speak. He ensures that he takes great care to clearly explain his directions, and also his reasoning behind such comments.

He also spends a great deal of time playing games, which during busy periods could reach up to 10 hours a day. For example, during the final stages of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s development, Miyamoto would play the game whenever he could outside of his meeting schedule.
