Minishoot Adventures Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Review

Back in early 2024, I played Minishoot’ Adventures on Steam Deck. It was one of my favorite games that year, blending elements of classic The Legend of Zelda games with shoot ’em ups in an elegant package that never overstayed its welcome. It always felt like it would be a perfect fit for the Switch, and it recently shadow-dropped onto all consoles, including Switch 2 and Switch. I’ve been replaying Minishoot’ Adventures on my Switch 2, Switch OLED, and Xbox Series X over the last week for this Switch 2-focused review.

If you’ve not played it before, Minishoot’ Adventures has you exploring, twin-stick shooting, solving light puzzles, taking on bosses, finding secrets, and more. When I first saw a screenshot, I thought it looked a bit basic, but booting it up for the first time was all I needed to understand it. Minishoot’ Adventures feels responsive and slick throughout. After a few minutes more, I was sold, and I think I finished it in two sittings over the course of a weekend.

While Minishoot’ Adventures perfectly suits the pick-up and play nature of portables, I also appreciate how it sprinkles its puzzles and upgrades at a steady pace so you never feel like you’re doing the same thing over and over again. Revisiting it on Switch 2 has only solidified how it is one of the nicest Zelda-likes in years, and this brings me to the only real issue with the Switch and Switch 2 ports: load times.

Minishoot’ Adventures looked and ran fantastically on Steam Deck, and I am pleased that it is excellent on Switch 2, with it being a bit lacking on Switch. I focused my time on the Switch 2 version and the only real issue is the load times. Not only is the initial load long, but even the load times in between areas when you are in-game are a bit too long for my liking. I hope this can be addressed in updates soon, since the developer is aware of the issue.

If you have access to other consoles, Minishoot’ Adventures loads a lot quicker, but this is absolutely a game you want to play on the go if you can. At least it is the perfect game to play on the go, so you’re better off waiting for updates or tolerating the long load times in an otherwise superb handheld experience on Switch 2.

One last thing I want to cover is the accessibility options. Minishoot’ Adventures thankfully lets you disable screen shake and flashing, but it also has many difficulty options, including essentially god mode and a game speed option if you aren’t good at twin-stick shooters and want to just enjoy exploration without worrying about combat.

If you enjoy classic The Legend of Zelda games and shoot ’em ups, Minishoot’ Adventures is an essential purchase. I can’t recommend it enough, and I will be buying it on PS5 to replay in the future once again. Minishoot’ Adventures is an amazing game and one that is a perfect fit for Nintendo Switch 2, but I hope the load times can be addressed in an update because they are the only issue with this port right now.
