Nintendo has announced plans to release Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge in Japan, a free-to-start game that will be launched as part of an amiibo promotional campaign that will start on January 28th.

Those that purchase an amiibo at participating retailers will receive a leaflet with redeemable codes that can be used to download the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions from the Nintendo eShop.

Treading the same ground as the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong series, where players must successfully guide wind-up toys to their designated goal by drawing bridges and Warp Pipes. But first, an amiibo must be scanned to unlock the character in-game – with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Rosalina, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong amiibo compatible in such way.

These characters will each have unique abilities, and special courses themed around them can be unlocked by discovering secret exits. Courses are exactly the same in both versions, and other amiibo will let you unlock characters created for the game.

Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge will launch exclusively for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in Japan on January 28th, and, for those that don’t wish to buy any new amiibo, will see release later on the Nintendo eShop.
