Ex-Rare employee Chris Seavor has shared an old story, in which a group of Microsoft executives had believed they owned the Donkey Kong franchise after the company purchased British studio Rare.

His story came after he had been asked as to where the Xbox One’s counterpart to the PlayStation 4’s Knack was, or why Microsoft weren’t considering a sequel to Xbox 360 launch title Kameo: Elements of Power.

“The current generation of ‘enablers’ won’t even know they own the IP,” Seavor began to explain. “Here’s a true story. When Rare was first bought by MS a group of execs came on a tour. One of them noticed the Donkey Kong posters everywhere and said ‘Hey that’s great. We own Donkey Kong, right?’ …/massivesigh”

Seavor has since formed his own independent studio, Gory Detail, who are developing The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
