Michael Fassbender will co-produce and star in a movie adaptation of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, Variety reports.

Fassbender, who has made such arrangements through his company DMC Film, has recently shot to fame through his roles in X-Men: First Class, Shame and Prometheus.

“Michael Fassbender was our first choice to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero,” explained Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”

Ubisoft were previously in talks with Sony to create a series of Assassin’s Creed movies, but negotiations have been put on hold.

Having invested in setting up Ubisoft Motion Pictures last year, work will begin on the original plan which will involve developing the film independently to maintain greater creative control. Whilst Sony may re-emerge as distributor, UMP will hire a writer and director for the project before resuming talks.

“We’re open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalized,” Baronnet discussed. “Whatever the financial model, UMP will limit its risk investment, and will save on production costs by turning to its 26 in-house game studios like Hybride Technologies, to handle visual effects work.”
