Mega Man Review

Believe it or not, but back in the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), companies like Capcom and Konami made games that were often considered as good, if not better, than those of even Nintendo.

Games such as Mega Man or Castlevania had gorgeous graphics, amazing soundtracks and gameplay that could easily pass as a Nintendo title in terms of quality. How times have changed, right?

Capcom launched the Mega Man series on NES in 1987, and the classic, debut entry is now available for Nintendo 3DS through the Virtual Console.

But, how does this milestone game hold up in 2012? It holds up very well in fact, but be warned that this game is challenging and much harder than even I remember from my childhood.

The gameplay is still great though. Simple fun that finds Mega Man run, jump and shoot his way from each stage of trying to beat each stage’s boss.

Each stage is themed around the name of the Robot Master you are out to face. Once you beat a boss, you gain their power as a weapon for you to use. These are best used in a rock, paper, scissor system, against one of the other Robot Masters.

The soundtrack still remains as something that will get inside your head for days, long after you’ve turned your Nintendo 3DS off.

As good as this game is, it is hard to recommend as the arrival of Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3 on Virtual Console can’t be too far away, and, to me, are far better games in the series.

If you can afford to buy as many releases as you please, then, by all means, go ahead and grab this as you most certainly won’t be disappointed. Well, not until you play Mega Man 2 at least…
