Masahiro Sakurai On Manga Characters In Super Smash Bros.

With news that the five Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters that will see release as downloadable content have now been selected, speculation has ramped up as to who will be added to the mascot brawler.

As part of that constant conversation, a response that Masahiro Sakurai gave 10 years ago when Super Smash Bros. Brawl was in development has been rediscovered.

When a fan had asked about the likelihood that a manga character could fight alongside the gaming icons, Sakurai talked about the effort required to add a character to the series and his belief that they should have some history in games – especially on a Nintendo console.

“Having manga characters participate here… is just not possible (clearly),” Sakurai explained in his reply (thanks to BlackKite for the translation).

“We did indeed implement characters participating from other companies, but it doesn’t mean we’re going to do anything and everything. Because this game is established from everyone’s cooperation.

“Both companies have to wish [for the characters] to join. They have to give the characters to me. A lot of dramatisations have to be approved in order for them to stand on the Super Smash Bros. world. The characters have to bear the history of games.

“Other than that, as a matter of courtesy, perhaps there may be also such a thing as ‘having appeared in Nintendo platform previously?'”

Whether his stance has changed since then is, obviously, unclear at this point. Which five characters would you like to see join the fight as downloadable content?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will release exclusively for Nintendo Switch worldwide on December 7th.
