Marvelous have confirmed that Kaio: King of Pirates has been cancelled, attributing the decision to sudden changes in the marketplace and the financial commitment necessary to have pulled off the project’s transmedia amibitions.

Based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it had been in development under Keiji Inafune’s guidance at Comcept – replacing the historical figures with a cast of adventurous animal pirates. There had been hope that it would have birthed a trilogy, and help introduce the story appeal more to a western audience. Although, we’ll now never discover if that would have struck such success.

It wasn’t a choice that Marvelous have made lightly, with the publisher admitting that they had splashed 461 million yen ($3.8 million).
