Mario Kart 8’s success has continued across North America throughout June, with the NPD Group revealing that the Wii U exclusive sold an additional 470,000 physical and digital copies.

That sees sales across the country soar past 885,000 copies after just over five weeks on sale, having launched on May 30th. Nintendo of America had plenty more to celebrate, with sales of hardware and software in June 2014 up by 233 percent and 373 percent compared to June 2013. Whereas, for the first half of the year, Wii U hardware and software sales have increased by 48 percent and 129 percent respectively, in comparison to the previous year.

The 3DS also saw a strong month, with hardware sales increasing by 55 percent compared to May, and Tomodachi Life selling more than 175,000 combined physical and digital units.

“These results reinforce the power of the Mario Kart franchise and speak to a bright future for the Wii U platform,” comments Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, Scott Moffitt.

“History has shown that Mario Kart games tend to have an extremely long tail. We fully expect Mario Kart 8 to continue to drive momentum for our hardware and software business through the holidays and into the foreseeable future.”
