During an interview with Nikkei, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has confirmed first week sales figures for Mario Kart 7 in Japan.

Having hit retail on December 1st, Mario Kart 7 has sold a staggering 420,000 units during its first week. To provide some perspective, that is approximately double the sales achieved by Mario Kart DS which was released back in 2005.

The Nintendo 3DS is also performing well, and is just about to hit the three million unit sales mark. The August price drop, and key software releases such as Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have helped to achieve this.
