The world has been hit with a shocking revelation after Nintendo revealed that Mario is no longer a plumber.

The moustachioed character’s profile was recently updated on the Japanese Mario Portal, which mentions that he worked as a plumber “a long time ago,” and now enjoys playing sports – whether that be tennis, baseball, golf, or, everyone’s favourite, Mario Kart.

Mario hasn’t always been a plumber, though, with Shigeru Miyamoto saying that he was a carpenter in Donkey Kong, which had been set on a construction site. It wasn’t until Mario Bros. that both Mario and Luigi became plumbers when they were tasked with investigating New York’s sewers after peculiar creatures had appeared down there.

He went on to play many roles, carrying a platform in Pinball, becoming an artist in Mario Paint, cleaning graffiti in Super Mario Sunshine, and restoring Power Stars to the Comet Observatory in Super Mario Galaxy, to name but a few.

Mario will soon return in Nintendo Switch exclusive Super Mario Odyssey, a globe-trotting adventure in which he will travel the world on an airship to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s wedding plans.

Super Mario Odyssey will release exclusively for Nintendo Switch worldwide on October 27th.
