In an effort to celebrate Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D’s launch, Nintendo have partnered with the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens for a rather unique event.

They are to host a four-day event over Memorial Day weekend (May 24th – 27th) which will see the gorilla area temporarily renamed the “Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D at Campo Gorilla Reserve.”

Attendees can try the game at demo stations, and receive coupons that will grant them $5 off the retail price at participating GameStop stores.

Yet the key event will be the “Donkey Kong Interactive Experience,” which will see staff feed real-life gorillas from enormous cardboard barrels inspired by those that feature within the game, with further opportunities for fans to have their photo taken with a costumed Donkey Kong character around the zoo.

“Fans will get a chance to spend time with Donkey Kong and some of his friends from the animal kingdom at the L.A. Zoo this Memorial Day weekend,” commented Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “They’ll be able to experience a fun day with Nintendo at the zoo and play Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.”

Los Angeles Zoo director John R. Lewis added, “Our gorillas have never had a visit from a celebrity of Donkey Kong’s stature. All the planned activities for the weekend fit perfectly in line with the family-friendly environment of the zoo, as well as bring awareness to the animals in the gorilla reserve.”
