Before Mighty No. 9 became a widespread disappointment, Keiji Inafune, Comcept and Intercept had started development on Nintendo 3DS exclusive Kaio: King of Pirates.

As a transmedia property, the project was to also encompass anime, manga and toys, with Marvelous acquiring the rights to fund and publish the game. With lofty plans for a trilogy, it was planned that the gameplay would be similar to that seen in the Dynasty Warriors series.

But, as Unseen64 reports, after repeat delays that saw the development window extend to four years, Marvelous chose to cancel the project – costing the company $3.8 million.

Ironically, Inafune would then turn to Kickstarter to secure $3.8 million to fund Mighty No. 9, although it wasn’t met with a favourable response from either critics or fans upon release. Comcept has also worked on Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, Soul Sacrifice Delta and ReCore, and are now hard at work on Red Ash: The Indelible Legend.
