Iwata: “It became difficult for developers to surprise customers with the current Wii,” Wii 2 not out until after April ’12

Satoru Iwata Wii 2

With today bringing the anticipated confirmation of Nintendo’s latest home console, Nintendo CEO and President Satoru Iwata has discussed the reasoning behind the need for its release commenting that: “It became difficult for developers to surprise customers with the current Wii.”

Iwata insisted that “We will offer something new for home game systems,” although said that due to 3D televisions not yet being widespread, making 3D a focal point of the system would be difficult.

Nintendo also haven’t included potential sales of the Wii successor within their earnings forecasts for the current fiscal year, due to end on March 31st 2012, with Iwata confirming that it won’t release until after April 2012.

Aside from the latest Nintendo home console, Iwata set a sales target for the Nintendo 3DS of 16 million units and confirmed that the company would release the handheld system across China and other countries as soon as preparations are made and finalised – possibly later this year.
