It has been confirmed that Ian Flynn, the lead writer behind the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, is writing the script and narrative for the upcoming Sonic Frontiers game.

Game Informer reports that the American comic book writer is “penning Frontier’s narrative,” news that has been met with enormous positivity from the community that surrounds the iconic blue blur.

“I was not prepared for the hype, and especially not prepared for all the personal well-wishes. So many of you who’ve been with me since the beginning (and even longer!) I am honored and blessed to be held in such high regard, and I appreciate every single one of you,” Flynn wrote on Twitter in response to the news becoming public for the first time.

“I’m excited to be part of the team, to collaborate with Sega to create the game’s story, and I hope everyone enjoys it when it comes out. Thank you again for all the love and support. I cannot properly express just how fulfilling it is to hear from y’all.”

Revealed at The Game Awards 2021, the iconic blue blur will star in his “first-ever open-zone-inspired gaming experience” which has been led by producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto (Sonic Forces and Sonic Lost World).

With the chance to explore the visually stunning, open-zone realm called Starfall Islands, you can “accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high-velocity open-zone freedom” – landscapes packed with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts and more.

“Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike,” explains Sonic Team USA creative officer Takashi Iizuka.

“With the effort of the talented developers at Sonic Team Japan, we’ve created an all-new style of gameplay experience for Sonic the Hedgehog, where players will be able to explore lush and expansive landscapes with Sonic’s signature speed and abilities. There’s sure to be lots of twists and turns around every corner in ‘Sonic Frontiers,’ and we’re excited to unveil more information about the game over the coming months.”

Sonic Frontiers will release at retail and on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide in Holiday 2022.
