Wondering what the Tera Shards in your Bag are for? After defeating the Normal-type Gym Leader Larry, the chef who works at The Treasure Eatery in Medali will offer you a special dish that she only makes for her favourite customers. This meal can change a Pokémon’s Tera Type in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.

What Is The Terastal Phenomenon?

The Terastal phenomenon can only be found in the Paldea region, and, when a Pokémon Terastallizes, a Tera Jewel will appear above its head like a crown and its body “glistens like a cut gemstone.”

Every Pokémon that lives in the region can Terastallize to gain special power – letting you enhance your battle strategies as this new gameplay mechanic increases the power of any moves that have the same type as your Pokémon’s Tera Type. There are 18 types, which will offer you countless combinations of Pokémon and Tera Types.

How To Change Your Pokémon’s Tera Type

When speaking to the chef at The Treasure Eatery for the first time, she will hand you 50 Normal Tera Shards which is enough to change a Pokémon’s Tera Type to Normal. This optional tutorial will push you to use these straight away, with the cook asking which of your Pokémon will gulp down the life-changing dish.

After this, the cook will need 50 Tera Shards whenever you want to change your Pokémon’s Tera Type. You can gather Tera Shards from defeating a Tera Pokémon in battle – whether that be from those which appear in the wild or by participating in Tera Raid Battles – as the item is created as a result of their Tera Jewel shattering. You can easily check how many you have collected using the Other Items menu in your Bag, returning to the cook once you have the required amount.

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are now available at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide.
