Nintendo have shared a rather detailed summary as to how amiibo will work in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

We’ve already learned about their launch plans for their ‘toys-to-life’ range which will include first and second waves of character figures, but this adds more examples of their benefits.

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U they can be beamed into the game as “Figure Players” (FP), filling an empty fighter slot in ‘Smash’ mode where they can either battle alongside or against you.

They will increase in level as they fight, strengthening their attack and defence statistics as they strive to reach the maximum level 50. Their level will increase faster if you pit it against a friend, or let it fight against other FPs. They’ll also, somewhat smartly, continually pick up tactics from strong opponents, learning tricks that will allow them to clinch victory from even the most daring circumstances.

Equipment that you uncover in the game can be given to your FP to raise their attack, defence and speed. As well as allowing them to access up to three abilities through equipment with special attributes, you can also customise their special moves as with the fighter roster in Custom mode.

Nintendo have stressed that each amiibo is entirely unique and individual to their owner, depedent on how they’re trained. You’ll also be rewarded with custom parts and gold that they earn when they battle, with more details about how they will work in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS to be announced down the line.
