Today is a special day for many people around the world, but for those that have long shared an adoration for Nintendo there’s a more obvious reason. For one of the world’s most widely respected creative visionaries, Shigeru Miyamoto, celebrates his 62nd birthday!

The creator behind many of Nintendo’s staple classics – whether that be Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda or Pikmin – was born way back in 1952, and joined Nintendo when they were still primarily a Hanafuda card manufacturer in 1977. Three years later he would then go on to create Donkey Kong, helping the company recover from the flop that was Radar Scope and propelling them further toward their eventual dive into the video games industry as we know it today.

Happy Birthday Miyamoto-san! Thank you for all that you have done, and continue to do, in bringing smiles to the many gamers around the world.
