Happy 126th Birthday, Nintendo!

We may still be recovering from partying too hard at Mario’s 30th birthday bash, but today sees Nintendo reach the ripe old age of 126 years old.

Founded on 23rd September 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, the company’s lengthy existence charts a historic shift from its early origins as a playing card company to the video games industry giant that we know it as today.

Nintendo has spoken about how 2015 was seen as a year of transition for the company, most notably seen through their business and capital alliance with DeNA, their preparation to reveal NX (their “dedicated game platform“) in 2016, and, unexpectedly, the tragic loss of late president Satoru Iwata.

Tatsumi Kimishima has now taken control, and will steer the company through their transitional period with guidance from newly appointed creative and technology fellows Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda.

What awaits us with NX still remains unclear, and while multiple patents filed earlier this year have begun to surface they could ultimately prove to be red herrings that allow Nintendo’s plans to remain shrouded in secrecy. But, there’s still plenty left to look forward to on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and we can look forward to seeing what else Nintendo has been busy preparing behind closed doors. Happy Birthday, Nintendo!
