The Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara first revealed Great Detective Pikachu on NHK’s The Professional in October 2013, an interview in which he had also teased Pokkén Tournament‘s development.

The electric mouse’s detective adventure was said to see players partner with Pikachu to tackle crime, with development known to have used motion capture and facial recogniation to improve the portrayal of Pikachu talking.

A Great Detective Pikachu trademark was soon filed, but we hadn’t heard any more regarding the game until know.

The Pokémon Company has confirmed that it will launch the project on Nintendo 3DS in Japan on February 3rd, now known as Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo. Starring a “smug, talking, loveable, detective Pikachu,” it takes place in Rhyme City and sees the player take the role of Tim Goodman.

Referred to as both a puzzle and cinematic adventure game, we’re awaiting news on a western release although it seems certain that this will form part of Pokémon’s 20th anniversary plans. In the meantime, enjoy the reveal trailer below!
