GameCube Controller Adapter “not compatible with any other Wii U software”

Update: Unfortunately the listing was false hope, and won’t work so broadly as erroneously stated. The device, which rebirths the widely adored controller will only work on Wii U, not Wii, and with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

“The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically – it is not compatible with any other Wii U software,” a Nintendo spokesperson clarified. “The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion.”

Original Story: The Nintendo Official UK Store has shared a rather intriguing tidbit about the GameCube controller adapter for Wii U.

The device, which allows you to hook up to four GameCube controllers to your Wii or Wii U, will apparently be “compatible with all games supported by the Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro and Wii U Pro Controller.” That’s a fairly broad spectrum for the 13 year old controller, and sparks the possibility that it could be used across the entire Wii U library.

We learned yesterday that the adapter will launch alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, which itself is releasing across North America on Friday 21st November and in Europe on Friday 5th December.
