Eastasiasoft and Artax Games have announced that their retro-inspired vertical-scrolling shmup Iro Hero will release on Nintendo Switch this week.
It is set in the year 2306, a century after humans first learned how to harness their energy to produce electricity. Nefarious enterprises soon turned this gift into a curse, reducing humans to little more than batteries. But, after the death of his mother, a teenager named Iro discovers that he may be the key to mankind’s freedom.
The game has looked to merge the old-school pixelated aesthetic of arcade classics with modern gameplay sensibilities like complex enemy AI, polarity mechanics and mind-bending puzzle elements.
You will have to shift polarities to avoid colour-coded hazards, balance an array of unlockable skills, and make use of reflective surfaces and colour areas to make it through the game’s nine action-packed stages intact.
“Iro Hero takes what I love about classic shmups like Ikaruga and adds a whole new dimension of strategy and complexity,” explains Artax Games lead game designer Jesús Luengo Rico. “I’m thrilled to finally let players discover the tight gameplay of Iro Hero.”
Iro Hero will release on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on June 7th, priced at £11.69 (€12.99 / $12.99).
