The June issue of Nintendo Power, having confirmed the existence of a Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, has since begun to land on the doorsteps of North American subscribers.

The handheld version is being co-developed by Sonic Team and Dimps, whose previous developmental experience encompasses Sonic Advance, Sonic Rush and Sonic Colours. Tetsu Katano is the director for the project having done so on Wii exclusive, Sonic and the Black Knight.

There will also be a storyline, which will differentiate itself from the console version but remain fundamentally the same, although the Nintendo 3DS version will only feature characters integral to the narrative.

Fans can expect the usual 2D side-scrolling gameplay for both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic, with the former incorporating momentum-based gameplay and platforming whereas the latter plays a lot like Sonic Rush and Sonic Colours.

Confirmed levels include Green Hill Zone and Casino Night Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and the Nintendo 3DS version will have exclusive stages and boss stages to that of its console counterpart. One such boss is Launch Base Zone’s ‘Big Arm,’ which also sees Classic Eggman make an appearance.

Special Stages are also confirmed to be an additional element within the game, and are similar in design to that seen in Sonic Heroes. Chaos Emeralds, as expected, serve as a reward for completing such stages, although as to whether Super Sonic will be available once they’re all collected is unknown.

In terms of the Nintendo 3DS’ stereoscopic 3D capabilities, Nintendo Power state that the Modern Sonic stages take advantage of it more, providing an example that during the Green Hill Zone Modern Sonic smashes through the bottom of a giant totem pole before the camera swings around in front of him allowing you to witness the remnants of the pole crashing around him as he escapes. Such depth is further highlighted with Modern Sonic freely moving between the foreground and background in places.

StreetPass functionality is also supported which will encompass a series of unlockable challenges, alongside a two-player race mode that is able to be played via local wireless connection. We’ll look forward to seeing the game in action when SEGA start to release trailers for the Nintendo 3DS version.

Sonic Generations is due to release on Nintendo 3DS towards the end of this year.
