Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIV is in development for Nintendo Switch 2, news that was shared at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 today.
“Thank you so much for your patience. It’s been a long time coming, but we are so happy to announce that you will be able to play Final Fantasy XIV Online on the Nintendo Switch 2,” Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu shared.
Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida added: “We’ve had so much support from Kiryu-san getting this to happen, and so I wanted him to be able to make this very important announcement for us.
“We currently plan to launch the Switch 2 version in August, but to make sure that our servers are stable, we’ll be starting with a short early access period of about a month. During this period, no Switch 2 version subscription fees will be collected. Then, once early access is over, official service begins.”
Yoshida continued: “Now, by no means do I wish to pour cold water on this amazing announcement, but I do need to talk about subscriptions. As you know, in the past, Final Fantasy XIV has only required players to purchase one subscription to be able to play on any platform. Again, as long as you have purchased the game for that platform, of course.
“However, after discussions with Nintendo, it was decided that the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV would require a separate subscription. This was decided after many months of discussions with Nintendo, and I understand that this is different to how we’ve done things before, but the following concessions have been made.
“One, you will be able to play Final Fantasy XIV on the [Nintendo] Switch 2 without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. And two, active Final Fantasy XIV subscription users playing the game on another platform will get 50 percent off the Switch 2 version subscription. Of course, for Warriors of Light, both new and old looking only to play on [Nintendo] Switch 2, you only need that one Switch 2 version subscription, the game and nothing else. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.”
Final Fantasy XIV will be released digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide in August 2026.
