Whilst it has been confirmed that the Wii U will now be able to field support for two Wii U GamePads, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has explained that he believes developers will initially focus on utilising a single controller.

“Games need to be built that can take advantage of the two GamePad controllers,” Fils-Aime explained to Gamasutra. “It’s going to be well after launch for those game experiences to come to life.

“Asymmetric gameplay is going to be the next major step forward, just like active play was when we launched the Wii,” the exec went on to claim. “We think that’s where developers will focus first, then there will be multiple experiences that have two GamePads.”

Fils-Aime believes that the Near-Field Communication technology within the Wii U GamePad will also provide plenty of interesting opportunities for developers.

“There’s a lot of things that can be done”, he shared. “I’ve already gotten letters from Pokemon fans wishing we would do something with it.”
