EVO 2016 organiser Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar has shared that a decision was made to “take a chance” on Pokkén Tournament‘s inclusion.

Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Pokémon brawler is among a handful of new additions to the official lineup, with others coming in Street Fighter V, Tekken 7 : Fated Retribution and Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator.

“Every so often, we like to take a chance on a game, and Pokémon is such a huge brand, we decided to take a chance on Pokkén Tournament,” Cuellar shared on Shoryuken, responding to a suggestion that it would be perceived as a wild card.

“Having Bandai Namco work on the game works well, as they are familiar with how fighting games work and balancing, so it should be interesting. This game is also on the Wii U instead of a handheld, so players can actually use controllers instead of using a handheld system to play. It will be exciting to see how this plays out.”

Pokkén Tournament will release exclusively for Wii U worldwide on March 18th.
