Everything You Need To Know About New Nintendo 2DS XL

When I had thought that Nintendo had chosen to save their surprises for E3 2017, New Nintendo 2DS XL happily strode out of left field. Nintendo Switch may be making headlines for becoming the fastest-selling system in the company’s history, but, with this new addition to the Nintendo 3DS family, it can be interpreted as a clear signal that Nintendo sees that there is plenty of life left in the dedicated handheld space.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima told investors that the company continued to see “strong potential for the continuation of this business,” and, who can blame him, especially after Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon had once sparked consumer interest to see renewed momentum build behind the otherwise ageing hardware.

With the original Nintendo 3DS now six years young, New Nintendo 2DS XL should be seen as more than a new coat of paint in being a welcome reminder that the company has never been rivalled in designing portable hardware dedicated to the games that we have come to love.

There Are Two Colours To Choose Between

The New Nintendo 2DS XL will be available in two colour variants at launch, Black + Turquoise and White + Orange. I personally lean more towards Black + Turquoise – it reminds me of the Wii U Premium Pack box colour, if anything – although colour preference is always personal!

The Price Point

Nintendo of America had shared that the New Nintendo 2DS XL would launch in the United States at a suggested retail price of $149.99, while in Europe, where retailers are left to set their own prices, Amazon UK has the console at £129.99 with GAME slightly higher at £132.99.

The Release Date

The New Nintendo 2DS XL will launch in Europe and North America on July 28th.

Nintendo’s Most Comfortable Handheld Yet

This is, by far, the most comfortable handheld design in the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, with a clear ergonomic focus that surpasses what came before it. Surprisingly lightweight with curved edges and a sleek clamshell design, lets this become the best that Nintendo’s dedicated portables have ever had to offer.

Larger Screen Size

The New Nintendo 2DS XL has 82 percent larger screens compared to the original Nintendo 2DS, meaning that it is easier to enjoy the games that you love without needing to squint at the screen.

No Stereoscopic 3D Support

The clue’s in the name, but, as with the Nintendo 2DS, the New Nintendo 2DS XL will not support glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. That will come as a comfort to parents that may feel uncertain about letting their children witness such technical wizardry happen before their eyes.

The Game Card And microSD Card Are Now Under Cover

If, like me, you have ever winced as your Nintendo 3DS tumbled in slow motion toward the floor, you will know that, aside from fearing any damage, it can dislodge your Game Card. With New Nintendo 2DS XL, a new flap has been introduced that will not only protect them, but provide easy access to swapping out your microSD Card.

Built-In amiibo Support

As with the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL, the New Nintendo 2DS XL comes packed with built-in amiibo support. Nintendo’s mascot figures can be used in a wide range of games, and this removes the need to purchase an accessory to put them to use.

More Control Options

The New Nintendo 2DS XL has a C Stick, ZL and ZR Buttons, expanding on the control scheme that was seen in earlier models. These have been implemented in more recent games, granting easier control over the camera, enemy targeting, and many more uses.

Tons Of Games To Play

It’s important to remember that you can play an expansive library of Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS games on the New Nintendo 2DS XL, with games to suit all tastes.
