Everybody’s Super LEGO Sonic Racing

What better way to kick off Sonic’s 35th anniversary year than with the launch of a couple of new LEGO sets featuring the blue hedgehog? While we’ve seen a number of builds released over the years including a diorama of Green Hill Zone, head of Shadow the Hedgehog and even a bite-sized take on the Biolizard from Sonic Adventure 2, 2026’s latest duo is interesting for two reasons. One is that we’re finally seeing a new character from the Sonic universe get the minifigure treatment. The other is that we’re now shifting gears from Sonic’s platforming adventures to his racing spin-offs.

First up is the smaller of the two sets – Sonic: Speedster Lightning. At just 126 pieces, it is one of the smallest sets released involving the blue blur, but at just £8.99, it also makes it among the cheapest.

What do you get in the box? Well, for starters, you have a Sonic minifigure (getting you one step closer to forming your own cute Sonic minifigure army alongside all the others from the previous sets). You will also receive a trio of rings with their own stand – hardly groundbreaking stuff, but at least it gives you a little something to add alongside the main piece itself. Finally, you have Sonic’s Speedster Lightning racer, a car modelled after the hedgehog’s ride from the 2025 release Sonic Racing CrossWorlds.

For fans, they’ll easily recognise the sleek blue vehicle, LEGO having done an admirable job shrinking it down to only around 100 pieces. While detail is limited, in a nice touch, lifting up the black hood reveals a green Chaos Emerald. While I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a tad disappointed in the size – an 18+ set in line with Mario and his kart, an awesome thought – but on the flip side, it is nice to see a branded video game set within pocket money range. Essentially, this feels perfect for fans, sure, but a kid’s birthday present too.

Released alongside the fastest thing alive is another set in Silver’s Car vs. Knuckles’ Monster Truck, this one a duo bundle including Knuckles and (for the very first time in LEGO form) Silver the Hedgehog. With the likes of Shadow, Amy, Tails and more already in my minifigure collection, adding Silver to that lineup already feels worth the price of admission alone (coming from a major Sonic the Hedgehog fan, of course). Beyond the minifigures, you can expect two vehicles and a couple of racing-related items (a toolbox and a set of traffic lights).

This is another set on the rather modest side when it comes to piece count (378 pieces to be exact), if you really break it down, then you’re looking at roughly the same number per character and vehicle as the Sonic set.

Kicking off with Silver, his rather futuristic-looking Neo Lightron might on the surface look like a white version of Sonic’s Speedster Lightning, but sets itself apart thanks to its curvy frame and clear blue pieces. Knuckles, meanwhile, sits inside a monster truck, his ride towering over both Silver and Sonic’s thanks to some larger wheels. While not based on his ride in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, it’s certainly the kind of choice you could see the mighty echidna choosing down the local car showroom.

The fact that the cars actually roll lends itself perfectly to kids’ playtime, whilst collectors will no doubt get a kick out of lining them up side by side (hopefully with more to come down the line). Speaking of lining up, I was also curious how Sonic’s karts compared with a certain plumber’s – after all, there are roughly a dozen different characters and vehicles out there in the wild. They definitely look similar in size with the Mario Kart sets maybe having a slight edge largely down to the fact that the characters aren’t minifigures and thus bigger than Sonic, Knuckles and Silver. When all is said and done, though, I’ll definitely be adding them to my kart collection, the trio of newbies blending in rather nicely with Nintendo’s crew.

With Sonic Racing CrossWorlds going strong and plenty more updates lined up for the rest of the year, it’s great to see the racing spin-offs getting recognised in LEGO form. And here’s hoping these two kart-themed sets are a sign of things to come, as I’d welcome the likes of Tails in his Whirlwind Sport or Shadow and his Dark Reaper.
