World Exclusive Super Mario Odyssey EDGE Review Scores A Perfect 10

With two weeks to go until Super Mario Odyssey launches worldwide, EDGE has become the first publication to review the moustachioed hero’s globetrotting adventure.

That sees the UK-based magazine award the Nintendo Switch exclusive a perfect score on their 10-point scale, becoming the twentieth game that the publication has awarded that score.

In concluding the review, the magazine writes: “There is, as we’ve already noted, a lot of Breath of the Wild in Super Mario Odyssey, from the chance to scout out potential destinations from high above ground, to the way the soundtrack often lets you acclimatise to your surroundings in relative quiet before the stage’s main theme announces itself.

“But it’s most obvious in the way its environments appeal to your natural curiosity, sights and sounds teasing you away from your present path – and in its sheer volume of diversions. Thought its worlds are more compact, it really does earn that Homerian title: Link may have more Korok Seeds to find than Mario has Moons, but not by many.

“And these two games, beyond their shared role in getting Switch off to a flying start, have something else in common. Like Breath of the Wild, Odyssey is a new entry in a long-running series that belies its age with sprightly invention, taking big risks with an established formula, and having all of them pay off handsomely. Mario might be getting on a bit, then, but a dinosaur? This astonishing adventure proves he’s anything but,”

Super Mario 64 was the first game that they awarded 10 out of 10 to, and, over the years, other Nintendo-related games that have done so include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Galaxy, Bayonetta, Super Mario Galaxy 2, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Bayonetta 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

In our Super Mario Odyssey preview, we were equally enthusiastic writing: “If variety is the spice of life, then Super Mario Odyssey is a particularly flavourful feast indeed.

“It is the return to that open-ended sandbox approach that looks destined to see the Nintendo Switch exclusive score superstardom, which, on early impressions, is set to shortly be celebrated as Mario’s greatest ever adventure. You could say my hat is off to you, Nintendo.”

Super Mario Odyssey will release exclusively on Nintendo Switch worldwide on October 27th.
