Nintendo has shared a Metroid: Samus Returns developer diary with Nintendo EPD executive officer and Metroid series co-creator, Yoshio Sakamoto.

As he explains, it has been 13 years since the last 2D Metroid game was released – Metroid: Zero Mission on Game Boy Advance.

The Nintendo 3DS exclusive’s story and basic structure are based on Metroid II: Return of Samus, but the controls, action and abilities are revamped enough that Nintendo feels that it can be seen as a new game.

Sakamoto moves on to summarise Metroid for anyone new to the series, and then the Free Aim, Melee Counter, Special Abilities and New Powers in the game.

Developer MercurySteam has shared how “honoured” they are to collaborate on the Nintendo 3DS exclusive.

Metroid: Samus Returns will release exclusively for Nintendo 3DS worldwide on September 15th.
