Nintendo has revealed more information about Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, which is out on Nintendo Switch next month.

Retro Studios‘ ground-pounding revival is back, which, originally released on Wii, has been treated to a high-definition upgrade for the portable home console. You will be able to experience 80 levels, which includes those that were added in the Monster Games-developed Nintendo 3DS port which came out in 2013.

After the villainous Tiki Tak Tribe steals Donkey Kong’s precious banana hoard, the Kongs barrel after them to recover it. Whether playing solo or with friends or family in local two-player co-op, an adventure awaits that will challenge you to stomp obstacles, send Mine Carts careening, fly high on Rocket Barrels or even hitch a ride on Rambi the Rhino.

You can choose to play in either Original Mode or the more accessible Modern Mode, which sees Donkey Kong have three hearts by default and there is a wider variety of items available to purchase at Cranky Kong’s shop. In Modern Mode you can carry up to nine items at once, such as Crash Guard that lets you survive two Mine Cart or Rocket Barrel crashes or the Green Balloon that lets you survive one fall off the level.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD will be released at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 16 January 2025.
