Square Enix has announced that it will merge Tokyo RPG Factory within its business, meaning that the developer has been dissolved.

gamebiz.jp reports that the publisher has taken over the developer’s rights and obligations, which, since it was founded in August 2014, saw it create I Am Setsuna (2016), Lost Sphear (2017) and Oninaki (2019) which all came to Nintendo Switch.

With its game output, the developer had sought to “capture the narrative depth, impactful storytelling and masterful character development inspired by the golden era of Japanese role-playing games and bring them to current hardware and technology.”

Whether it was able to achieve that is debatable. Critics were impressed with I Am Setsuna (Metascore 75), but Lost Sphear (Metascore 69) and Oninaki (Metascore 68) weren’t met with as much of a positive reception.

While the developer had explored concepts for a fourth game, it is unclear what the team had been working on since Oninaki was launched in August 2019.
