2K and Firaxis Games have confirmed how Sid Meier’s Civilization VII Nintendo Switch 2 Edition compares to the original Nintendo Switch version.
Behaviour Interactive has led on the port in collaboration with the developer, which will have a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack (£8.99 / $9.99) for those who have already purchased the game on the portable home console.
For those who do choose to upgrade, the good news is that you save states and game progression will carry over to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
Aside from support for GameChat and mouse controls with the Joy-Con 2, on Nintendo Switch 2, you can expect increased graphical fidelity, increased frame rate performance, larger map sizes, and support for more players in multiplayer.
Compared to the original Nintendo Switch version, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will offer:
- Supports GameChat functionality: Players can take advantage of the new GameChat feature on the Switch 2 while playing multiplayer with friends.
- Supports Joy-Con 2 controller mouse support: Players can play with the Joy-Con 2 controller as a mouse to have a PC-like experience on their Switch 2.
- Increased graphical fidelity: Compared to the Switch, Civilization VII on Switch 2 offers higher graphic fidelity.
- Supports larger map sizes: Players on Switch 2 have larger map sizes offering Standard maps sizes not available on the Switch version.
- Supports more players in multiplayer compared to Switch 1: Players on Switch 2 can play with 5 players in the Antiquity age and Exploration Age and up to 8 players supported in the Modern Age at launch.
- Increased performance: Players will experience increased framerate performance compared to the Switch version.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will be released at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide on 5 June 2025.
