Ripstone has shared more details on the multiplayer features coming to Chess Ultra on Nintendo Switch, that will see those calculating their next move on the portable home console able to enjoy cross-platform compatibility.

That will present the chance to play chess matches against other players on PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, which is welcome news for those always on the lookout for new competition.

With the chance to play on the big screen with the console docked in TV mode, in Tabletop mode with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, and in Handheld mode with the Joy-Con or touch screen, the developer also has another surprise in store.

Exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, an adaptive user interface can see two players place the console down between them to let it act as a virtual chess board. Sat either side, each player will use a Joy-Con to take their turn in what could soon turn out to be the ultimate tabletop challenge.

Chess Ultra will release on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch in 2017.
