Nintendo has released a Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker demo on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS, letting many experience the puzzler’s tricky sandbox-style levels for the first time.
It challenges you to explore compact levels inspired by Japanese box gardens, called “Hakoniwa,” as you search for hidden treasures and precious gems.
Captain Toad’s heavy backpack means that he can’t jump, so you will need to help him avoid the enemies, traps and obstacles to reach the Power Star in each course.
There are more than 70 levels to play and four new Super Mario Odyssey-inspired bonus levels that have been added, based on New Donk City in the Metro Kingdom, Mount Volbono in the Luncheon Kingdom, Tostarena in the Sand Kingdom, and Fossil Falls in the Cascade Kingdom.
These can be unlocked through normal gameplay, but those that have a Super Mario Odyssey amiibo figure – Mario (Wedding Outfit), Peach (Wedding Outfit) or Bowser (Wedding Outfit) – can scan it to access them straight away.
And then, those that have a Toad amiibo can scan that to receive a powerful Invincibility Mushroom appear, while any other amiibo will reward you with a 1-Up Mushroom.
We really enjoyed the time that we spent with the former Wii U exclusive, concluding in our Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker review:
“For me, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a reminder of why we all fell in love with Nintendo. Bursting with personality from every pixel, this puzzle-offering exemplifies their unique approach to game development in continually exploring new experiences to excite and often surprise their audience. In that they succeed once again, rounding off what has been an amazingly consistent year for their talented teams.”
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will release for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS worldwide on July 13th, and is now available for digital pre-load on the Nintendo eShop priced at £34.99 (€39.99).
