BBC iPlayer now available on Wii U

With minimal fanfare, BBC iPlayer has today become available for Wii U through the Nintendo eShop.

Confirmation came that the BBC were working to bring it to Nintendo’s home console early last year. We were later told in August by executive product manager Marcus Parnwell that the development team were “fairly close with the Wii U,” before confirmation came in December that it would launch in early 2015.

The online streaming service, which allows users to catchup on television and radio programmes, is said to use “a standard HTML 5 based application,” that eases maintenance across supported platforms, while allowing for “device specific customisations.”

BBC iPlayer is currently available through the Nintendo eShop to those in the UK, with the application being 91.4MB in size.

  1. Thanks for the article. Just want to inform all folks who live outside US that Nintendo Wii is a great media Player. If you want to access Netflix and other streaming stations on your Nintendo Wii you can use UnoTelly as I do to get around the geo block.
