Numskull Games has stepped in to publish the Kickstarter-backed Battle Axe at retail on Nintendo Switch.

The “sumptuous pixel-art arcade adventure” game received support from 1,867 backers who pledged £73,918 to help bring the project to life.

Taking inspiration from genre classics such as Gauntlet and Golden Axe, you can choose from three heroes to set out on your quest – whether that be playing alone or with a friend in local co-op.

It comes from a small, highly experienced team that includes designer Henk Nieborg (Lionheart, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, Contra 4, Xeno Crisis), composer Manami Matsumae (Mega Man, Final Fight, Shovel Knight), and programmer Mike Tucker (Super House of Dead Ninjas, Xeno Crisis).

“Numskull Games brought a real passion to the table when they saw our plans for Battle Axe, with the team there personally invested in this sort of classic-style game,” explains lead designer Henk Nieborg.

“We recognised they were the right publishing partner to put Battle Axe in people’s hands and we’re especially excited with the opportunity to see our games at retail.”

Battle Axe will release at retail and on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide in January 2021.
