Aonuma: Wii U GamePad “Disrupts Gameplay” In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has come to the realisation that diverting a player’s attention between the TV screen and Wii U GamePad “actually disrupts the gameplay,” indicating that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won’t put the controller to use beyond Off-TV Play.

Nintendo’s incomparable Shigeru Miyamoto isn’t as involved as he once would have been with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, in fact it is the first console iteration that he isn’t actively assisting with development.

“I’m actually the one who was the most affected by Miyamoto taking a step back, because now I have to take on all the responsibilities of Zelda,” Aonuma explained to Wired. “I thought, hey, this is my chance to create something I really want to create!”

That doesn’t mean that he isn’t influencing the game’s direction, a scenario that reflects Miyamoto’s new role as creative fellow.

To the development team, “Miyamoto is God,” Aonuma adds. “So even when I say, hey, this is what I think should be done, they’ll always question: ‘Well, what would Miyamoto say?'” They want to create an experience that he would enjoy, and his suggestions have helped to shape the game’s core elements. “Up until about two years ago, Miyamoto actually had a lot of comments and advice about Breath of the Wild.”

That was at the time when late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had asked Miyamoto to explore gameplay concepts that could take advantage of the Wii U GamePad. After trying to implement a dual screen approach, the developers soon rejected the idea.

“We realised that having something on the GamePad and looking back and forth between the TV screen and the GamePad actually disrupts the gameplay, and the concentration that the game player may be experiencing,” Aonuma explained. “You have your car’s GPS system on your dash. If you had it down in your lap, you’re going to get into an accident!”

Of course, Breath of the Wild is coming to Nintendo NX. Whether that lends any indication that the controller for the “dedicated game platform” won’t have a second-screen is unclear. But Aonuma says the two versions will play identically: “I’m not going to create something where the users are going to have a different experience,” he closed.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will release for Wii U and Nintendo NX in 2017.
