There won’t be much for you to do on your deserted island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons without a sturdy set of tools, whether that be a Shovel to dig up fossils, a Net to catch bugs or an Axe to gather wood and chop down trees.

You won’t have these when you start the game, and, naturally, many players are wondering how they can get their hands on them to start enjoying their peaceful island existence to the fullest.

The good news is, it won’t take long. Soon after your island-warming party, Tom Nook will invite you to participate in a DIY Workshop, explaining that the basic idea “is to gather materials, follow a recipe, and then craft using a workbench.”

The first DIY recipe that you will make is a Flimsy Fishing Rod, for which you will need to use five tree branches. After this, Tom Nook will provide you with some free DIY recipes, which will let you craft your first Flimsy Net.

It’s worth mentioning that once Resident Services has opened, you will also be able to buy a Flimsy Fishing Rod, a Flimsy Net, a Flimsy Watering Can and a Slingshot, as long as you have the Bells to pay for them.

The easiest way to earn Bells early on is to shake trees with whichever fruit that is native to your island hanging on them, which can then be sold to Timmy at Resident Services. These Bells can then be used to buy your first tools, which allows you to unlock the others.

From this point, you will want to start using the Fishing Rod to reel in fish or the Net to catch bugs. These must then be handed over to Tom Nook in Resident Services, who will send them on to “an old friend” who runs a museum for a closer look. You will be rewarded for your efforts (and curiosity) at different stages…

How To Get A Shovel And Pole In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

If you’re looking to secure a Shovel or a Vaulting Pole in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you will need to give five different specimens to Tom Nook.

Those that have played previous Animal Crossing games will know that the “museum-curating friend” that Tom Nook refers to is Blathers.

Once you have handed over five “outstanding” specimens, Tom Nook will call Blathers and, after their conversation, will explain that Blathers is coming to your island to help identify and preserve the local creatures.

You will need to choose a spot for Blathers to set up his tent, which, as you progress, will become the Museum. Visit him when he arrives the next day, and the wise owl will explain that he wants you to cross the river in your search for fossils that he can exhibit in the Museum.

This will soon see him transmit the DIY recipe for the Vaulting Pole to your NookPhone, as well as the Shovel that you will need to dig up any fossils that you spot buried in the ground.

How To Get An Axe And Watering Can In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Tom Nook will reward you with the DIY recipes to craft an Axe and a Watering Can as you continue to hand over specimens to him to send to Blathers. You will receive these before you reach the point that Tom Nook talks to Blathers about moving to your island, so keep catching fish and bugs.

How To Upgrade Your Tools In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

If you are looking to upgrade your tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you will want to save up 3,000 Nook Miles to buy the Pretty Good Tools Recipes from the Nook Stop multimedia terminal.

This is a collection of six DIY recipes for tools with “excellent durability,” with the data for them sent straight to your NookPhone after you redeem your Nook Miles.

The Flimsy tools will break after you use them 30 times, but, those crafted with the Pretty Good Tools Recipes will last much longer.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now available exclusively for Nintendo Switch worldwide.
