Alicia Vikander has been cast as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot from MGM and GK Films.

Variety reports that sources had shared that while other actresses were courted for the role – such as Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley – Vikander had always been their first choice.

She won an Oscar for her phenomenal performance in The Danish Girl, with other standout roles including Ava in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina.

The movie, which will be directed and produced by Roar Uthaug and Graham King respectively, has been in discussion since 2011, when King acquired the rights from Square Enix. MGM then partnered with his production company GK Films to help bring it to life in 2013, and a new draft of the script was recently penned.
