LEVEL-5 president Akihiro Hino discussed the development of Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney within last week’s Nintendo Direct, revealing how the concept came to be.

“Our latest game features an exceptional crossover between our Professor Layton series and Capcom’s Ace Attorney series,” he begins.

“When we made our first Professor Layton game, we actually had the Ace Attorney series in mind as our biggest rival. We put in a lot of research to make the best gaming experience we could so that we could try to surpass them. After we released our game though, I did secretly think it would be great if we could do a collaboration with the Ace Attorney series one day. Now that dream has come true!”

He continues, “Both our companies have poured our hearts and souls into making these series what they are now, and neither of us wanted to take this great opportunity to merely create something that would be considered a spin-off work. We approached the project with the idea of merging the two series into something of movie-level quality that feels like an authentic part of each series.

“I feel I can proudly say that, in this unprecedented joint effort, we were able to surpass both original series in terms of sheer quality and quantity of content! We really went to great pains to take the best parts of each series and work them into this game, all the way down to the fine details.

“Obviously such a collaboration is going to be big news, and it would be easy for this to precede the actual game. However, I can’t emphasise enough that the content makes the most of the best parts of both series to create an even more spectacular work. I hope you all enjoy playing it!”

Hino is also interviewed in a new Iwata Asks sat alongside Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi, whilst you can try a puzzle demo on the game’s official website.

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney releases across Europe on March 28th.
